Music Theory 201 is a course designed for musicians who have studied music with a professional teacher for at least two years. Each student should posses an advanced understanding of how to read notes on the treble and/or bass clef staves. Students should also have intermediate to advanced skills on an instrument. Ideal ages are 7th grade and up. This is NOT for beginning music students or those with limited experience/knowledge of music. This is part 1 of 2 in a series of 4 month long, intermediate to advanced theory instruction. Each student is required to purchase a workbook AND textbook for the class. These materials will be used throughout both modules of this course. Total cost of materials (brand new) is approximately $300. Although you may find them cheaper with other retailers. The textbook is available as an e-book and is a bit cheaper. Be sure and purchase the 5th edition of the text. The Amazon link for these materials are below. This will introduce the student to a cutting edge, professional software that is widely used by composers and arrangers everyday (including your teacher, Mr. Jim). Class will last 45-55 mins About your teacher: Jim Ellis is a professional composer for film, TV, and video games. Jim also owns and operates a theater and film production studio in Harford County, MD. He studied music education at the Univ. of MD and ultimately earned a degree in music composition from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He is currently a graduate student at Berklee, studying composition for film and TV. Also appearing on his resume is professional actor, film producer, theater director and producer, and teacher.
